Carlton Oaks Country Club - Carlton Oaks Santee, California

It is on the golf course that Carlton Oaks truly dazzles. The 18-hole championship Dye-designed course has golf roots that date back to 1958. However, the course was totally renovated by Perry Dye, son of Paul B. “Pete” Dye, in 1989. Pete Dye became a legend in the field of golf course design and construction and received the 2008 World Golf Hall of Fame lifetime achievement award. Dye Designs has established a worldwide reputation for creating unique, challenging and environmentally sensitive golf courses that are always fun to play. Carlton Oaks is certainly no exception.

The Carlton Oaks course has five sets of tees, ranging from a modest 5,039 yards to a mind-bending 7,410 yards! The yardage options translate into a thrilling experience for golfers of all abilities. The design takes full advantage of the natural river-valley setting and includes a meandering creek, mature trees and sparkling lakes, all of which combine to provide a round of golf as stimulating for the eyes as it is for the mind. The course employs a typical Dye design by using pot bunkers, railroad ties and peninsula greens to create a dramatic effect. According to golfnow.com, “Dye has taken the spectacular beauty of Southern California, incorporated the qualities of modern golf course architecture, added style, grace and excellence to create a course that legends are made of.”

“The two nines are very, very different,” says Chris Brown, Carlton Oaks Head Golf Professional. “The front nine is a little tighter, requiring you to make more demanding shots. They’re both equally long in terms of distance. The front nine does have some trees, a creek running throughout the entire nine and one lake. If you’re playing from the back tees, you have to be able to play every shot. You have to be able to draw the ball and fade the ball. If you’re a higher handicap or leisure golfer, you just move up to the appropriate tee and you’re still going to have as much fun,” adds Brown.

In addition to the course itself, you will find a chipping green, a putting green and an all grass driving range with private instructional areas. In February 2013, the chipping green complex was completely renovated and rebuilt, resulting in a pristine bent grass surface giving players a great chance to lower their scores. As the only Dye-designed course in San Diego, Carlton Oaks is not only great for golfers but good for the planet as well.

Come play the same San Diego golf course that Phil Mickelson played growing up and used to hone his golf skills, before becoming one of the game’s great champions. You may just be the next champion to launch a career by practicing and playing Carlton Oaks.

Carlton Oaks is located just 20 minutes from downtown San Diego. It is close to the city’s most popular tourist attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, Balboa Park and the Midway Museum.

Indian Canyons Golf Resort - North Course - Palm Springs Palm Springs, California

Indian Canyons Golf Resort has been a jewel of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley since 1961. Once a private club named Canyon Country Club, this 36-hole facility was a favorite haunt of Hollywood celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, and Jackie Gleason. Former U.S. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson and Ronald Reagan also walked these fairways. The course is set on 550 acres of Native American tribal property and pays homage to its roots with authentic art work displayed by artist Richard Selgado.

The North Course was designed by William F. Bell, son of famed golf course architect William P. Bell. The longer of the two courses at Indian Canyons, the par-72 North plays 6,943 yards and features stunning mountain views and unique, mid century modern homes, several of which were originally owned by Walt Disney. Of the six water hazards on the course, the most notable is the lake between the 9th and 18th holes that is home to the famous Disney fountain, which to this day shoots water over 100 feet into the air. Set in Palm Springs' "Canyon" district and surrounded on three sides by the San Jacinto mountains, you can count on a pleasant, wind-free round of golf.

An entirely different and distinctive round awaits on the South Course. In 2004, architect Casey O'Callahan remodeled the 6,582-yard layout with player consultant, LPGA legend Amy Alcott, who has helped make the South an area women's favorite from the 4,878-yard forward tees. This scenic course is home to four ponds and 850 palm trees. Also, 500 Washingtonia Filifera, a cherished tree of the Agua Caliente Native American tribe, are abundant throughout the course. Golfers will particularly enjoy the South's five par 5's to take on during the round.

Once considered a hidden gem off the beaten path to Coachella Valley visitors, today, Indian Canyons can be found right in the heart of the all the action in Palm Springs. Following a round at either course, golfers can enjoy dinner and drinks in the South clubhouse while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding San Jacinto mountains.

California Golf Club of San Francisco - California South San Francisco, California

California Golf Club's quartet of one shotters help make the course a stand-out with MacKenzie's bunkers providing the strong appeal to the 200 yard twelfth.

Eventually, better times returned and by the mid-1960s, the California Golf Club once again wanted to make sure that they offered the best course possible and the day’s biggest name in golf architecture, Robert Trent Jones Sr., was brought in. His work is discussed below though little of it remains today, and the California Golf Club proudly hosted the United States Senior Amateur in 1970.

In 2005, the California Golf Club board decided to address the nematode problem that was afflicting the greens just as it was at other leading clubs in northern California. Given that the greens needed to be rebuilt and thus the course would be closed, the California Golf Club board mulled over what else needed attention. Certainly, the course didn’t drain particularly well in the winter. Also, the bunkers in general had become tired and there were several competing styles as no one would ever confuse a Jones bunker for a MacKenzie one.

Sensing this was a one-time unique opportunity to make major improvements to the course, the California Golf Clubsolicited proposals and fourteen different architects responded. One of the fourteen, Phillips Design, didn’t even submit a plan but rather gave them a sense of the opportunity that it saw by looking at the land where the new seventh hole now sits. This bold vision of Kyle Phillips impressed the board and ultimately it led to his being hired.

As we will see below, his proposal differed in substantial ways from the other proposals/architects that the California Golf Club considered. In particular, the front nine had seen several events conspire against it since the days of MacKenzie and Macan. To bring the front nine up to a similar quality as the back, Kyle Phillips‘s plan needed to be dramatic and indeed it was. Its two key elements were for the practice area to be relocated as well as for five (!) entirely new holes to be created. To Kyle Phillips‘s everlasting credit, three of the new holes (the third, seventh and eighth) are among the best on the course and as a result, the members now have an active debate as to which of the nines is better.

Just as important, Kyle Phillips knew when to leave well enough alone. No outside events had materially impaired the back nine as they had the front. Thus, there was a sense that the California Golf Club possessed a relatively untouched nine that featured MacKenzie’s own indelible stamp. Armed with a 1938 aerial, Kyle Phillips focused on realizing as much of MacKenzie’s playing spirit as possible on the back. In doing so, two small man-made ponds that had been added by the California Golf Club in the early 1990s were mercifully removed and the fifteenth green was slid to the right by thirty-five yards.

The Course

Buckingham is rated among the top three 9 hole courses in California. Eighteen sets of tees for 18 distinctly different holes of golf. PGA professional Mark Wotherspoon has redesigned the course with new tees new hazards, new bunkers and a new island for the par 5 17th hole. Local golfers consider the par 5 17th hole at Buckingham, Lake County's most challenging golf hole. Followed by the par 4/ 464 yard hole 18th hole, Buckingham is a great test of golf for golfer of any ability level.

Take aim at the right side of the fairway with a long iron or fairway wood to hit the narrow fairway that is guarded by a long fairway bunker and water on the left and out of bounds to the right. A quick green that is guarded by three bunkers and an inlet of water lurking makes for a precisely demanding approach shot. Par is a great score on the #1 handicap first hole.
