Big Lake Country Club, located in Manila, is a great source of recreation for golfers in all towns across Buffalo Island. It is the only nine-hole golf course located between Jonesboro and Blytheville.
It was established in 1962 by a group of interested people. A meeting was held in the school cafeteria and the 30 to 35 people present donated $50 each to get it started.
The land for the golf course was donated by the late Blue Hoyt and later purchased by Adams Land Company. Adams donated the golf course to the City of Manila.
Big Lake has served the community for almost 50 years.
It is open all year, closing only two days, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Big Lake has a driving range and a clubhouse.
Several benefit tournaments are held each year, including the Wayne Taylor Memorial Scholarship Tournament, the Buffalo Island Veterans Memorial Golf Tournament and others. Big Lake also hosts a member-guest tournament, a parent-child tournament and a Bill Clark Memorial tournament.
Big Lake also works with area high schools by allowing the course to be used by high school golf teams for practice and tournaments. Area young people learning the game of golf through the First Tee Program also use the course.
Through Big Lake Country Club residents from across Buffalo Island have become friends.
The club manager is Dwayne Gauf. Employees in the clubhouse include Linda Cherry and Donnie Moore.
Ronald Jones is the Greenskeeper. Also working on the outside are Kenneth Holt and Robert Trammel.
Jones said the greens are good this year, but it has taken a lot of water.
Big Lake has a full schedule with stag night with scramble, couples night, Par 3 scramble, night ball, Scotch, mixed pairs, Labor Day Scramble, Club Championship, Ladies' Round Robin, and more.
The club hosts parties on several occasions, including Halloween, New Year's Eve, and Christmas.

The public golf course at the Westside Golf Center is a nine-hole, par-3 course. Steve Humphries designed the course, which opened in 1975. It has adequate length and challenge for being a 9-hole course. The golf course's layout rewards good shots.
The Tifdwarf grass greens are small and the Bermuda grass fairways are open. There are also several strategically placed sand bunkers that demand shot accuracy. A river runs through the course, forming water hazards on almost half the holes.
The Westside Golf Center facility, along with the excellent par-3 course, offers a putting green, chipping area and driving range as well as an on-site golf pro and pro shop.

Golf
Golf at Willow Point can be described in one word - breathtaking.
Whether it is the gentle, rolling terrain or the beauty of Lake Martin, a round of golf at Willow Point will provide you with a memorable experience and leave you wanting more.
Built in 1964 by Tommy H. Nichol and re-designed by Hurdzan & Fry in 2002, Willow Point features two very different challenges: the links style front nine with our distinct fescue grass, and the back nine, where Lake Martin comes into play on six holes.
Our course has generous landing areas off the tee and open approaches that allow you to run shots onto all of our well-manicured greens. Our year-round bent grass greens provide some of the smoothest putting surfaces you will ever experience.
With six sets of tees ranging from 7,400 yards for the bomber and 5,200 for ladies, you can find a comfortable yardage that will allow you to enjoy the challenge -- and scenery -- of Willow Point.

The Par-3 Course at Vestavia Country Club is one of two private courses offered at the club, the other being a championship length, 18-hole course. Originally, the club only had the 18-hole course but later added the Par-3 Course to create more golfing options and a family-friendly facility. Although it is less demanding than its larger, longer sister course, it is still a fun course that is perfect for taking kids to while adults play the bigger golf course. Vestavia Country Club also offers professional instruction in the form of private or public lessons and clinics. An excellent practice range in addition to its other golfing facilities has made the Vestavia Country Club a popular choice.
