Cog Hill Golf & Country Club

Designed by: Dick Wilson/Joe Lee (1964), Rees Jones (2008)
Known as the "Patriarch of Public Golf," Joe Jemsek aspired to provide a country club experience and amenities to all golfers. Course No. 4-DUBSDREAD was the fulfillment of that dream. Famed architect Dick Wilson and his associate Joe Lee were selected to create Joe's vision. Their challenge was to create a public layout that would test the world's greatest golfers. In short, they succeeded.

Nationally ranked since its opening in 1964, Course No. 4 was given the nickname "DUBSDREAD." The name DUBSDREAD is derived from the idea that a "dub" or poor golfer should beware and served as a warning of the challenges forthcoming. True to its name, this natural-style championship course places a high demand on shot making ability ability by providing tight landing areas combined with heavily bunkered, large undulating greens.

In light of recent advances in golf club technology and agronomy, the "Open Doctor" Rees Jones was brought in to re-establish the original intent and strategy of DUBSDREAD'S design. The renovation plan incorporated square tees, repositioned bunkers and hazards, and all 18 greens were rebuilt and recontoured with Sub-Air drainage.

Over the years, DUBSDREAD has challenged professionals and amateurs alike while hosting the PGA Tour's Western Open Championship (1991-2006), BMW Championship (2007, 2009-2011) as well as the USGA's 97th U.S. Amateur Championship (1997),
the U.S. Amateur Public Links (1970 & 1989), and the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links (1987).
DUBSDREAD has been fortunate to receive recognition by numerous golf publications such as "Top 100 Golf Courses in the U.S." by Golf Magazine, one of America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses" by Golf Digest, "Best Course You Can Play in Illinois" by Golfweek, and one of "America's 75 Toughest Golf Courses" by Golf Digest.

Portland Golf Course

Find sanctuary...one magnificent hole at a time

Situated on pristine farmland are two of the area's best golf courses. Only 20 miles west of Portland are two championship golf courses. Both were etched into the landscape by renowned golf course architect Bob Cupp. Lush stands of towering trees frame undulating fairways and manicured greens, creating a stunning tapestry for respite, relaxation, and adventure. Both golf courses lend themselves to walking, allowing players to enjoy the golf courses the way they were meant to be played.

Ghost Creek: Spectacular golf, Portland beauty.
Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club’s par-71, 6,839-yard Ghost Creek layout was crafted by Bob Cupp in the “old” style, leaving the Portland wetlands terrain completely natural. This Portland public golf course is subtle and cunning, featuring a variety of distinct and equally memorable holes framed by lush stands of trees, dramatic mountain vistas and ragged wetlands. The phantom Ghost Creek materializes throughout the golf course, adding to the layout’s stunning beauty.

How To Play A Private 100 Greatest Course

If you've been unable to cultivate friends at the 100 Greatest Courses you long to play—or can't qualify for a USGA event scheduled at one of them—don't give up. There are other opportunities to post a round and support a charity at the same time.

Just ask Keith Bank of KB Partners outside Chicago. In 1996 Bank contacted the American Cancer Society and volunteered to organize a fundraiser at Medinah Country Club. For the next 15 years he headed the Chicago Select Golf Invitational, an event that has raised more than $6 million to fight cancer. The opportunity to play Medinah (whose No. 3 course is 31st on the 100 Greatest) has attracted players from all over the country. Twice the event has had to relocate to a different course, but the alternate was another 100 Greatest venue—nearby Olympia Fields Country Club, whose North course is No. 62. The contribution required to participate: $10,000 per foursome for the No. 3 course and $5,000 for the No. 1 course.

Another thing that helped put the Chicago event on the map was Bank's then-novel idea to auction rounds at other 100 Greatest Courses. One year the 100 Greatest rounds auction alone raised $290,000, Bank says. Although he had occasionally played Medinah before the first American Cancer Society event there, he had not checked many other 100 Greatest Courses off his bucket list. Largely because of his auction purchases, Bank at one point had played 91 of the courses on Golf Digest's ranking, including 49 of the top 50. Says Bank: "I tell my wife that because the list changes, I'll never be done."
