(New) Dormie west End N.C.

DORMIE is an 18 hole Coore & Crenshaw designed golf club that opened as a private club in May 2010. Many consider Dormie to be their best work to date. Non-member play is being accepted for a limited time.

The course is built on 307 acres and located in the middle of 1,028 acres of rolling sand hills. There is a 110' change of elevation across the property.

Conceived as an exclusive private club just a few miles north of Pinehurst, the economic downturn forced owners to open its doors to outside play last year. The design is typical of Coore & Crenshaw, a timeless look where holes often play to targets obscured by landforms, bunkers or ground-hugging green contours. Play it soon. One never knows when Dormie will revert to its original business plan.

Mountain Course

After undergoing renovations by Nicklaus Design, the Mountain Course was reopened in July 2006 and plays to a maximum of 7,700 yards, par 72. This beautifully designed course features wide, forgiving fairways and large greens with beautiful mountain vistas, ideal for a range of skill levels and handicaps.

Course History

In 1959, Jack Nicklaus won his first national title and first major championship, the US Amateur Championship, on the links at The Broadmoor. Forty-nine years later, his company, Nicklaus Design, brings the legacy full circle, with a redesign of one of the most beloved Broadmoor golf venues, the Mountain Course. Working in collaboration with Nicklaus Design, a wonderfully scenic and playable golf course has been created that blends seamlessly with the Broadmoor's other award-winning courses.

Pronghorn Club (Nicklaus)

Golfing in Central Oregon has never been better. This Bend, Oregon golf course has it all: ancient lava rock ridges and outcroppings, magnificent views of the Cascade Mountains, natural landscaping that accents beautiful transitions and true putting surfaces. Designed by master golfer Jack Nicklaus, this signature golf course plays firm and fast and accommodates golfers of every skill level.

This 7,379-yard, par-72, 18-hole course features attention to detail and combines strategy with playability. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course provides a minimalist experience with an emphasis on the golf game itself. The 300 plus days of sunshine in Central Oregon allows for golfing year-round, while the amenities at Pronghorn Club & Resort cater to your other senses.

When it first opened, Pronghorn was strictly private and its Nicklaus Course was ranked by Golf Digest as No. 2 among America's Best New Private Courses of 2004. Two years ago, the club (which also has a Fazio-designed 18), began allowing public play on its Nicklaus track, whose back nine may be the most delightful Jack has ever designed, with gambling holes and gorgeous scenery at every turn.

THE ULTIMATE SOUTHERN ESCAPE

For the avid golfer, a trip to The Inn at Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina is a journey to nirvana.

Designed to challenge golfers of all skill levels, the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Course meanders through the May River Forest and features wide, inviting fairways with strategic bunkers and natural waste areas. Champions Bermuda greens, well guarded by white-sand bunkers, test your nerves, while gently undulating slopes challenge your putting skills. All tee boxes and fairways feature Paspalum, the newest eco-friendly turf.

Caddie service is required with each round, and we encourage you to walk the course so you can best appreciate the beautiful native landscape.
Take in the majesty of century-old live oaks and serene native landscapes as you linger on the scenic, 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. Woven throughout the May River Forest are 7,171 yards, with several holes on the banks of the river. Plus, enhance your game in the world-class practice facility. Golf South Carolina and treat yourself to the ultimate golf paradise.

Built some 35 years after nearby Harbour Town Golf Links, May River is an interesting contrast in Jack Nicklaus's portfolio, an equally low-profile layout with a number of bump-and-run approach shots but with several Pine Valley-like waste areas. It has a classic routing with the first nine turning clockwise through forest, the back nine circling counter-clockwise and both touching repeatedly on the wetlands of namesake May River.

Cambers Bay University Place, wash

The USGA lists the 115th US Open as taking placing in University Place, Washington, but that may be about to change. The News Tribune is reporting that the Washington city of University Place is considering changing its name to "Chambers Bay."

University Place is the home to the famous Chambers Bay golf course which has hosted a US Amateur championship and will hold the 2015 US Open. According to the article, the city suffers from an identity crisis as it is not home to a university at all and the city's "mayor finds merit in the idea because...outsiders often confuse it with the University District in Seattle or with that city’s upscale shopping center, University Village."

From a legal standpoint, the change is relatively simple. Unlike forming a municipality from unincorporated land, which requires county approval in most states, a resolution of the town council adopting the new name would likely suffice.

By the time Golf Digest named Chambers Bay as America's Best New Public Course of 2008, the course had already been awarded the 2010 U.S. Amateur and 2015 U.S. Open by the U.S. Golf Association. In the Amateur, it proved to be hard, both in the firmness of its dry fescue turf (Jones called the fairways, "hardwood floors") and in difficulties around and on the windswept greens. Some greens have been toned down for the Open, which should be a rare experience.

The Pasatiempo Golf Course

Pasatiempo was designed by world-renowned golf architectAlister MacKenzie. Even though MacKenzie also designed Augusta National and Cypress Point, Pasatiempo was his favorite layout and where he made his American home, which still borders the sixth fairway. Today, this historic top 100 course is a semi-private golf club that sets aside certain tee times each day for public play.

Pasatiempo is arguably Alister Mackenzie's favorite design. After all, he lived along its sixth fairway during the last years of his life. With its elaborate greens and spectacular bunkering fully restored by Tom Doak, Pasatiempo is a classic example of Mackenzie's art. The back nine, playing repeatedly over deep barrancas, is a test for even the most talented of golfers.

Forest Dunes Golf Club

Forest Dunes is another course, like Spyglass Hill, that has portions that look like Augusta National (pristine turf, pines and gleaming white sand bunkers) and other portions that look like Pine Valley (rugged holes edged by native sand dunes deposited by the nearby Au Sable River). Forest Dunes has clever greens with subtle contouring, with some treacherous pin positions just beyond false fronts of steep putting surface or just beside fall-away ear lobes leading off the sides of greens.

About the Course

This is a “very good course.” And The Godfather was a pretty good movie!

“Forest Dunes offers upscale amenities and superb conditions. The golf course remained below the radar for some time but is flourishing following an ownership change. As the name implies, the course is a mix of forest and sweeping hilly holes. Forest Dunes has been touted "Pine Valley meets Augusta.” This Tom Weiskopf design certainly stands among the state's best.”

Many golfers tell us this is their best course ever. Their “Bucket List” course.

General Manager Todd Campbell might be soft-selling Forest Dunes Golf Club a bit when he says, “This is a very good course.”
Yeah, and Frank Sinatra could carry a tune. The Grand Canyon is a neat place to stop and snap a photo …
Mr. Campbell’s humility aside, the round you play at Forest Dunes will always be the very best experience you can possibly have on grass. With five sets of tees, it is playable for all levels of golfers.
Superintendent Jim Bluck has been onboard since Day One. In fact he played the course before it was completed, fell in love with the layout and decided he had to be a part of the equation here. If you’re going to maintain one of the best golf courses around, you’re going to need one of the best Super’s around. Bingo!
With award after award, it all comes down to course condition and Jim is the Picasso of grass!

The Prince Course

The Prince is a prince, indeed. It was Golf Digest's Best New Resort Course of 1990 and a member of America's 100 Greatest from 1993 until this year, when it dropped off. (It's presently No. 107 on our Second 100 Greatest). The course was closed during 2011 to allow for a total renovation. The new and improved Prince now has Seashore Paspalum turf and some of the surrounding jungle cut back for playability.

Prince Golf Course at Princeville

It has been called one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. With its setting above the Pacific Ocean with views to the majestic mountains of the north shore of Kauai and the ocean, the Prince Golf Course would be any golfer’s dream to play on. A multi-million renovation, overseen by the original architect, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

Ranked as Golf Digest’s #1 Golf Course in Hawai’i and one of America’s Top 100 Greatest Courses, the Prince Golf Course is an 18-hole Championship Course situated on pristine land on the Central and Eastern Plateaus.

This par- 72 course climbs slopes and careens down hills for a demanding layout that calls for golfers’ most accurate placement. Named for Prince Albert, son of Hawai’i’s King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, golf at the Prince Course is truly a royal experience. The Prince Course continues to receive top marks from Golf’s top publications:

the High Land Couse at Primland

The Highland Course at Primland, named in 2007 as the year's Best New Public Course in the $75 and Over category, sits atop a mountain plateau overlooking some of the most unusual scenery in America, a deep river valley dotted with tall spirals of rock. The course design by veteran British architect Donald Steel is austere in its green contours and bunkering, as if not to overpower the setting.

The Course

The Highland Course was designed with both pleasure and challenge in mind.

Highlights of the Blue Ridge Mountain golf course include:

  • Closely cut areas around greens provide many short game options.
  • Use of bent grass gives the golfer fast surfaces, and fescue grasses add challenge and a contrast of color.
  • A 145 slope measurement attests to the course’s degree of difficulty, and the rating of 74.6 strokes confirms it.
  • Bio-filters are strategically placed around the golf course to protect the natural trout streams and rivers that originate within and surround Primland.
  • Wetlands around the course remain untouched and are treated as environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Electric golf carts are available and recommended.
  • 25 dollar charge applies for use of the driving range. These fees are included in a daily green fee.
  • Use of the putting greens is complimentary.

The Chamber bay Golf Course

People will go to the ends of the earth for a truly unique experience.
Welcome to the ends of the earth.

Welcome to Chambers Bay, Washington State’s golf masterpiece – a unique tribute to the historic links of Scotland and Ireland. With Puget Sound providing a serene backdrop to Chambers Bay, this breathtaking layout winds through a stunning coastal setting, among windswept dunes and native fescue grasses. The snow-capped Olympic Mountains rim the western shore and eagles keep silent watch overhead. In every sense, Robert Trent Jones II has created an awe-inspiring design that is as spectacular as the beauty surrounding it.

This Washington state golf course is home to the 2015 U.S. Open and 2010 U.S. Amateur Championships and is conveniently located just outside of Tacoma, in Pierce County. Less than an hour’s drive South from Seattle, this 18 hole championship golf course provides a traditional, links-style layout featuring impressive emerald greens, dazzling fairways, and brilliant tees. The overall views are just as spectacular as your soul escapes into the history of the game. This walking only, public resort links-style golf course provides that incomparable venue for large-scale tournament events as well as intimate private group outings.

This is golf in its purest form and nature at its best. So if you are looking for golf in Washington, we invite you to share the experience of Chambers Bay, Pure Links Golf.

Erin Hills Golf Course

How does one label a golf course? Links courses are easy to identify, but how do you describe Pebble Beach? Parkland and Heathland courses are straightforward to identify and label, but is there a category for Sand Hills (other than "Excellent")? What about Erin Hills, near Milwaukee? Is there a label for courses routed over the kettle moraine areas left by glaciers? How do you describe the type of golf presented at Erin Hills, laid out over such terrain with a mix of traditional and innovative ideas and designed with the intent of hosting a major championship?

While Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw have talked about the challenge of routing Sand Hills after having identified more than 100 golf holes that could be built, architects Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Ron Whitten had more difficulty at Erin Hills than one might initially expect from a site of 652 acres of rolling terrain formed by the glaciers. For starters, there are more wetlands than one would expect. Even after playing the course several times the golfer may not realize that the course is essentially surrounded by wetlands and a small river.

Also, while it may be tempting at first to compare the site to that of other wonderful natural sites such as Sand Hills and Ballyneal, Erin Hills, like Sutton Bay, was not blessed with uniformly sandy soil. Rather, its ground consists of glacial till of varied composition, which occasionally means small rock and some drainage concerns.

In an unconventional decision for a course in Wisconsin, the architects decided to use fine fescue for the fairways to emphasize the natural contours of the property. The fine fescue provides a firm playing surface that requires the player to think about where he wants the ball to land in order to finish at the target, as the two are refreshingly not always the same. The fine fescue fairways also mean that the course plays shorter than its length on the score card. The record length of 7,760 yards for the 2011 U.S. Amateur at Erin Hills did not overly tax the players from a distance perspective.

While the driving game is primarily one of the ground, the approach shots present the more modern challenge of aerial golf. As the greens are bent grass, they will hold a well-struck approach shot, and, as so many are elevated, bouncing the approach shot into the green is rarely the best play.

The course was also designed to be able to accommodate the U.S. Open, in terms of both the challenge to the players and the logistics for handling more than 60,000 spectators and the related support structure. This mix of traditional and modern elements as well as a championship test over a unique piece of property will leave many golfers marveling at how they have never played anywhere like Erin Hills.

Not surprising given the books on the subject of golf course architecture written by Hurdzan and Whitten, the architects took care to get the practical aspects of the routing "right". For example, the opening holes do not play towards the east and the rising sun (the 5th is the first hole that does so), and the last three holes run to the east with the setting sun behind them. While it would have been tempting to route the holes through the valleys for both attractive holes and for the expected spectators as at Royal Birkdale, Hurdzan, Fry and Whitten routed the holes so that they attack the hills from all angles –along the sides (e.g., the 1st), between hills (e.g., the 17th) and up and over hills (e.g., the 12th).

As is the case with many great courses, Erin Hills was designed with the knowledge that it would be a work in progress, with refinements made after it was seen how the course actually played. Only arrogance and foolishness would have an architect believe that his work is beyond improvement before the course is even played. In its brief five years after opening, Erin Hills has been closed twice for significant work to the course. When Hurdzan, Fry and Whitten initially designed the course, they did so with the mindset of erring on the side of moving too little earth – a refreshing perspective after decades of heavy earth moving in the industry. While it is possible to return and push earth around, it is impossible to go back and return the ground to its natural state.

There were some bold ideas, such as the Dell Hole and the natural Biarritz-style 10th green, but actual play of the course showed some features to be quite unpopular and unwise. In the case of those two holes, the Dell Hole was eliminated (which was easy to do, as a "bye" hole had been built originally, and that hole became the 9th) and a new 10th green built. A new 4th green was built, going from one extreme to the other by eliminating a punchbowl-style green and building a new green beyond it on the brow of a ridge. Other changes have been less substantial in scope but quite noticeable in effect, such as the removal of a tree left of the 1st fairway and the shaving off of part of the top of the ridge crossing the 2nd fairway so that a player who properly plays down the left side is rewarded with a view of the green. Some central fairway bunkers (e.g., on the 18th tee shot) have been removed.

When Andy Ziegler purchased Erin Hills in October 2009, he knew work had to be done immediately if Erin Hills were to host a successful U.S. Amateur in 2011 and land the prize of being awarded the U.S. Open. Ziegler appreciated that the golf course is the key to Erin Hills’ success. In addition to the architectural changes to the course, Ziegler also made the decision that Erin Hills would become a walking-only course, as the cart traffic was harmful to the fescue fairways and as Erin Hills should appeal to the serious golfer. A network of substantial asphalt roads was also built throughout the course for the maintenance equipment and to provide significant infrastructure for the hoped-for U.S. Open. All the work was rewarded when the United States Golf Association awarded the 2017 U.S. Open to Erin Hills in June 2010.

Woodhall Spa The Hotchkin Coursemod

The huge bunker that protects left edge of the green on the 414 yard par 4, 4th hole on the Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa The National Golf Centre, on August 22, 2005 in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, England

Southern Hills Tulsa, Okla.

An inspiring tee shot starts from an elevated tee to a slight dogleg left with the ideal tee shot position being in the left side of the fairway to avoid the fairway bunkers on the right. This tee position will allow an open second shot with a medium-to-long-iron to a green which slopes from front to back and is guarded by three traps.

The Estate Club

The 18-hole The Estate Club in Lancaster, OH is a public golf course that opened in 1967. The Estate Club measures 6249 yards from the longest tees. The course features 3 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are bent grass and the fairways are bluegrass.
New owners has made VAST improvements. The course is getting better and better with each passing day. Great course for all ages. If you want to have a day of fun, try this course.

This course is in average condition considering it probably does not get that much play. As such, most of the cart paths are in need of repair and additional maintenance is needed. During the heat of the summer, the course dry's out and isn't that appealing although several of holes are still challenging to play. On the plus side, the staff is extremely friendly and they have good deals on packages for greens fees.

Quaker Ridge

This slightly elevated tee looks down another long straightaway par four. The wall of trees on the left hides a parallel water hazard. At 270 yards, two fairway bunkers flank the right side. The approach is guarded only by a gentle up slope and deep bunkers left and right will punish any "short sided" miss. The "very unique" Tillinghast sculpted bunker at the rear comes into play when the hole is cut at the back. An arcing ridge separates the steeply sloping front from the flatter rear plateau on this green. Front-left and top-right hole locations are most difficult.
