Desert Highlands Golf Club - Desert Highlands Scottsdale, Arizona

Hole 1, Par 4
From a granite grotto overlooking the Valley, your tee shot descends 125 feet to a generous landing area. Your approach shot to an undulating green requires accuracy and distance control.

Jack Nicklaus designed golf, magnificent views, tennis on a variety of playing surfaces including grass, award winning clubhouse with excellent formal and informal dining, refreshing pool, state-of-the-art fitness facility and much more all nestled into the sides of Pinnacle Peak. But most importantly, Desert Highlands is an established, intimate community of residents who appreciate and understand quality in every aspect of their lives.

Another thing that makes Desert Highlands so attractive isn't even inside the gated, 24-hour security patrolled community with its state-of-the-art security systems. It is the wide array of stores, banks, restaurants, schools and medical facilities that are literally within minutes of the gates. A little further are the galleries and charm of Old Town Scottsdale to the south or Carefree to the north, and the cultural district and sports arenas of downtown Phoenix.

Robert "Red" Lawrence was born in White Plains, NY in 1893. He was a layout engineer at the Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York.

Red Lawrence was well placed among the second generation of American designers. Lawrence emerged from the "Philadelphia School" of golf course architecture as a design assistant at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA. He worked for and with William S. Flynn at Merion from 1921 to 1932.

Later, Lawrence's work as an associate involved him in a number of inland Eastern USA golf courses including The Cascades at the Homestead Resort in Virginia and other fine courses. Red Lawrence is a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (founded in 1947). In May, 1958 at the age of 65, Red left the East Coast and moved to Tucson, Arizona. He designed many courses in Arizona, including in the Scottsdale/Phoenix/Chandler area and in Tubac. His design of Desert Forest Golf Club (1962) earned him the nickname of the "Desert Fox" as it was the first true desert golf course in the Southwest. It is also his premier course design. Red died at the age of 83 in 1976, and was inducted into the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame in 2003.

Hilton Head Golf Course Opens New Service Center Close to Anniversary of Fire

Nearly a year after its golf cart barn was destroyed by a fire, Bear Creek Golf Club celebrated the opening of a new member services center on the barn's site Thursday.

Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin cut the ceremonial ribbon outside the center, which houses administrative offices, bag storage, and the cart storage area.

The cart barn burned on Nov. 26, 2012, destroying 52 golf carts and causing almost $600,000 in damage. The fire, which broke out at about 5:30 a.m., was believed to be arson, Hilton Head Island Fire and Rescue Marshal Joheida Fister said at the time.

Investigators found a utility cart with its lights still on near the fire. The cart appeared to have been used to break through a gate at the maintenance yard, the Sheriff's Office said.

After ironing out insurance and permitting issues, construction on the new building started in March, Bear Creek board of directors president Dick Males said. Males said construction was completed in mid-October, about a month ahead of schedule.

Males said three club members designed the center, which is larger than its predecessor, and selected the builder.

The building has a new, state-of-the-art security system, public relations coordinator Sue Rodier said.

"There will be no more arson here," she said.
While the building was under construction, the club used a trailer for office space and a portable storage unit for bag collection. Both were removed from the club's parking lot last week, Rodier said.

The golf club's new electric golf carts were on display at Thursday's event. The club had used borrowed gas and hybrid golf carts for the past year. Rodier said the club had to use gas carts because the fire left no place on the grounds to charge electric carts.

Rodier said a $10,000 reward offered by former board president Hugh Murphy still stands and is covered by the club's insurance. Murphy said in January the reward would be given to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the fire.

Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said no new information was available about the fire. The investigation was still active, the sheriff said.

Conway Man Wins Case Against Coastal Carolina's Hackler Golf Course

A Conway man whose vehicle was struck by an errant golf ball as he traveled along S.C. 544 near the General James Hackler Golf Course has been awarded $3,250.

William Wood sued course owner Coastal Carolina University after a golf ball struck and damaged his truck on April 15, 2011.

Wood, who said he would have settled for $300 at the time of accident, had hoped to force the course to shut down until something was done at Tee 14 to prevent golf balls from landing on the highway and a nearby sidewalk, but Circuit Judge Edward Cottingham ruled that “was a another procedure for another day.”

“The issue in this case is the amount of damages and who if anyone is responsible,” Cottingham said when the trial got underway Tuesday afternoon.

Wood, who served as his own attorney, was seeking $1,128 in actual damages and between $6,975-$14,000 for depreciation.

“We’re here today because Coastal Carolina University forced me to trial,” he said. “It took almost three years and this lawsuit to make them move the tee box at the 14th hole. Over time that $300 ballooned and ballooned and ballooned.”

Wood told the court that he was more interested in public safety than money. He said he blames Coastal Carolina University instead of golfer James Michael Hamilton of Michigan, who hit the ball because the S.C. Department of Transportation provided $35,000 to correct the problem years ago.

Wood said the money that was supposed to be used to erect a protective wall was instead used to plant trees that don’t do the job.

“I hold Coastal Carolina University responsible because of the design of the golf course and their arrogance in not fixing it years ago,” he said. “It’s a safety hazard. It’s a public nuisance at the 14th tee and other parts of the golf course.”

Wood said the tee box for the 14th hole is too close to the highway, creating a dangerous situation for drivers, walkers and even residents of a mobile home park on the other side of the highway. He said CCU recently moved the men’s and women’s tee boxes at the 14th hole farther from S.C. 544, but golf balls can still easily make it to the highway and beyond.
“Every time I go by there I get nervous,” he said. “I want them to put up safety netting. It’s not about me, it’s about the community.”

According to Charles Thrash, who headed up the Professional Golf Management program at CCU before retiring in June, the school has received a “handful of complaints about balls from the 14th tee landing on the highway.”

Thrash said he isn’t aware of anyone ever being injured by flying golf balls.

“My opinion of the hole is it was designed pretty good,” he said. “It’s been there since 1968. There’s been a handful of incidences we know of.”

The jury ruled yesterday that the University was solely at fault for Wood’s damage. Although Wood didn’t name Hamilton in his lawsuit, the school brought a counterclaim against him.
Hamilton was not at the trial, and the jury asked Cottingham, because its members had found Hamilton had no fault in the incident, if it could make CCU pay for his attorney’s fees, but the judge said no.

Franklin Lakes Could Build 275 Residential Units on Golf Course

By James Kleimann/NJ.com NJ.com
The proposed 275-unit development at High Mountain Golf Course in Franklin Lakes.
FRANKLIN LAKES – Borough officials on Tuesday took the first step to rezone High Mountain Golf Course to accommodate 275 residential units.
According to a statement released by the borough council, members on Tuesday passed a first reading of an ordinance that would see the development of 60 single family homes, 160 carriage homes, and 55 affordable housing units at the site of 131-acre property on the Wyckoff border.
The deal is contingent on the borough approving the project, which would see the private golf course closed by the end of 2014. Luxury home builder Toll Bros. reached an agreement with the owners of the golf course to purchase the property.
Franklin Lakes officials had been negotiating with Toll Bros. for more than a year, agreeing in October to reduce the density to 275 acres.
The proposal will now go to the planning board for review on Nov. 25, and an eventual vote. The public hearing before the mayor and council is scheduled for Dec. 17.

Ontario Golf Course Operator Requests $221,500

Christina Marfice Argus Observer Argus Observer

Ontario — The Ontario Municipal Golf Course will require $221,500 to operate through next fiscal year, up from $125,000 in 2013, according to manager Scott McKinney.

“My plan is simple,” McKinney said. “It will get us down the road. I’m asking for your support. I will be accountable to this number. With the support of the council, we can get this off your plate, move on and have a golf course.”

McKinney was previously asked by the Ontario City Council to provide a budget and priorities for the course's future. According to his presentation at Thursday's city council meeting, adding acid to the irrigation system, repairing communications and obtaining equipment are the top three priorities.

“In the last year, we've solved a lot of issues,” McKinney said. “I've gained a real understanding of what was going on. I've pored through ten years of general revenue income and expense statements from the city, so I got a picture of what was happening at both ends of it.”

McKinney also addressed the golf course's troubled past.
“I gained the trust of the membership,” he said. “The nest step is I need to gain the city’s trust. You’ve been throwing a lot of money every year at the golf course, and it's been spent and the result are poor. The money needs to be spent properly. This year on a tight income, I believe a consensus with the membership is we did a very good job.”
Councilor Norm Crume expressed his concern that even more money will be needed down the line.

“You came to us asking for $125,000 and it was so low we had to give it to you,” Crume said. “It was too good to be true.” McKinney argued that his budget is still considerably lower than the average yearly budget for 18-hole golf courses in this area, which typically require at least $300,000 to operate. “If you guys are going to not fund it, there’s a whole lot of wasted money,” McKinney said. “There’s no kicking the can down the road. If you don’t act, you won’t have a golf course.”

Canyon Mesa Country Club - Canyon Mesa Sedona, Arizona

Canyon Mesa provides the perfect recreational complement to the beautiful red rocks of Sedona. A nine-hole executive gem that caters to every type of golfer. Tucked quaintly away in a corner of the Village of Oak Creek just 8 miles south of Sedona on Hwy. 179, Canyon Mesa is ideal for novices and yet challenging enough for the more experienced. Due to its short length -- it averages just 140 yards a hole from the white tees -- Canyon Mesa is perfect for those just learning the game. But its narrowness and difficult greens makes it challenging for long-time golfers working on "target golf". Canyon Mesa is also the best public golf value in Sedona.

Canyon Mesa Country Club caters to these golfers
  • seniors: who don't hit the ball as far as they used to love our shorter course
  • women & couples: like the compactness of Canyon Mesa without the standard long holes,
  • families: where one or more might be "learners" intimidated by a champship course
  • golfers on a budget: players who like to spend $25 on 18 holes, not $100+
  • serious golfers: who want to work on their "short game"
  • time limited: golfers who don't have 4 to 6 hours to play can finish 9 holes in 1 1/2 hours or less and 18 holes less than 3 hours

Stenson on Course for Golf Np 1 Spot, Cazinares Leads Dubai

Henrik Stenson enjoyed a near flawless opening day of the $8 million DP World Tour Championship on Thursday, marred only by a missed par putt from three feet on the final hole.

Henrik Stenson tees off at the 3rd hole during the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on November 14, 2013. At the Earth course of Jumeirah Golf Estates, the Swede shot a sublime four-under-par 68 to remain on course to become the new European No1, finishing as the best among the nine players in with a chance of winning the Race to Dubai this week.
Stenson was just two shots off the early pace set by Spaniard Alejandro Canizares, while Australia's Marcus Fraser and Thai Kiradech Aphibarnrat were tied second at five under par after shooting rounds of 67.
Welshman Jamie Donaldson, second last week at the Turkish Open and one of eight players who can still overtake Stenson, was tied alongside the Swede and Spain's Rafael Cabrera-Bello at 68.
Race to Dubai No2 Justin Rose of England opened with a 70, No3 Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland was on level par, while No4 Ian Poulter of England started with a 69.
Defending champion and former world No1 Rory McIlroy started with back-to-back birdies, but could not get any more after the seventh and finished at one-under-par 71.
All eyes were on the last two two-balls, comprising the four players in control of their own destiny, and it was Stenson who was the best on the opening day.
The 37-year-old, who is struggling with a wrist injury and needed to pull out of the pro-am on Tuesday to rest, missed just one green in regulation and hit 12 out of 14 fairways to sit five under after 17 holes.
He made his only mistake of the day at the par-5 last when he reached the green in three and then three-putted for his only bogey of the round.
Despite that, Stenson said: "I played really solid. I hit a lot of good shots, and a lot of good putts as well.
"You can't win tournaments on a Thursday, but you can certainly play your way out of them. So, I'm happy the way I'm playing and I would have taken a four-under.
"I will let that slight disappointment of the three-putt on the last disappear and then we'll look forward to tomorrow."
Poulter, who missed several chances in his 69, said: "I am annoyed. I holed two putts that were outside birdie range, and then missed most others. The greens are tricky to read and very quick.
"I am playing as good as I ever have, I am more confident than I ever have been and I am swinging better than I ever have.
"That's a good combination and I think I am in a great position just three behind the leaders."
Canizares, who won on only his third European Tour start in 2006 but has not won since, had just one bogey in his round of 66.
And the 30-year-old from Malaga revealed he faced a few issues getting into the United Arab Emirates for the tournament.
"My girlfriend, she's from the Czech Republic, and I always forget that she doesn't have a Spanish passport, so she needs a visa to get in," said Canizares.
"It was my fault, I forgot about it, and we got very, very lucky with the help of Nick Tarrat, the Tournament Director here, who helped a lot. We were very lucky in the end and they let us in. So it was a stressful moment, but it was fine in the end.
"I played very solid, didn't do anything extraordinary, but I holed some good putts. I missed some shots as well, but was pretty steady overall and am quite happy with the result."

The historic North Course opened in 1958 and is a traditional tree lined course with small greens that require more accuracy than power. The South Course was added to the facility in 1992 and is a more wide open track with large greens and plenty of mounding which is a totally different experience than the North Course. Both courses have as a backdrop the rugged rock formations of Granite Dells and the Bradshaw Mountains.

Over the years, Antelope Hills has hosted many PGA and USGA events including US Open Qualifying, Arizona State

Turquoise Valley Golf/RV Park - Turquoise Valley Naco, Arizona

Nice People, Great Food, Quality Golf
"Black Jack Pershing camped here. Pancho Villa marched on it.
Mammoth bones were found here and the W.P.A. built it.
Welcome to Turquoise Valley Golf, Restaurant & RV,
where we’re Nice People, Great Food & Quality Golf." Matt Ferrence

Located in Historic and Sunny Naco, Arizona, Turquoise Valley is

the oldest continuously operated golf course in ...

the Grand Canyon State, it's first to reach 100 continuous years of

age --and still going strong!

Turquoise Valley is also home to the infamous 747 yard "Rattler,"

the only... Par 6 in Arizona, it is according to Forbes Traveler the

5th-Longest Golf Hole in the United States and by

Today's Golfer (UK) ranked as 10th-Longest on Planet Earth!

Minutes from Tombstone, "The Town Too Tough To Die," and the

famed Mile-High Climate and Old World Charm of Bisbee, Arizona,

Turquoise Valley provides easy access to the many offerings of

Cochise County.

In other words, we're great for a long term visit that can

complement the passions of golfers and non-golfers alike! For a

little more background...
Turquoise Valley was founded in 1908 as the Warren District Country Club to serve Bisbee, the “Queen of the Mining Camps.” Now considered an artists colony, Bisbee was once the largest city in Arizona, home of the state’s first stock exchange and also one of the most important mining communities in the United States.

To access the Country Club, one could hop a trolley past what today is arguably the oldest surviving baseball field in all the States, where the NY Yankees –before the time of a true baseball “farm” system- had an independent league team and where Major League teams, such as the Indians and Cubs, actually played in exhibitions until the 1950s.

The original golf course featured sand-and-oil greens and was crisscrossed by train tracks. In fact, it’s been said that errant balls landing in train cars were sometimes carried several states away in drives of Epic Proportions!

In 1936, a Works Progress Administration project relocated the golf course to Naco: site of the first U.S. air-invasion by a foreign interest and where Pancho Villa eluded General “Black Jack” Pershing almost two turns of a century ago. An area rich in history, Naco is located in a county named after an Apache of no small significance; and some 100 centuries before Cochise, early Americans were already living and hunting here, as evidenced by a place in
Greenbush Draw often referred to as, “The Naco Kill Site.”

Fast forward to today and Arizona’s first golf course to be open 100 continuous years continues to make history. Turquoise Valley has been featured in Arizona’s Greatest Golf Courses, by Bill Huffman, and Off the Beaten Cart Path, by Dave Marrandette, two books focused on quality golf courses that embrace the spirit of this great game. The Southeast Arizona Traveler has named us southeastern Arizona’s top rural course and we’ve been selected by ESPN as a Regional Qualifying Site in their National Two-Ball Challenge.

Despite the exclusive accomplishments, Turquoise Valley remains steadfastly inclusive and a welcoming environment for golfers of all ages and abilities, as evidenced by our selections as one of the Top Ten Beginner-Friendly Courses in the U.S. by the National Golf Foundation and an AETNA Insurance Small Business of the Year. Further confirmation of our friendly confines might be that Arizona golfers voted us one of the state’s favorite 19th (read: “watering”) holes in an

Arizona Golf Association survey. Yet, throughout it all, it is our 747 yard, fifteenth hole that most people talk about first when talking Turquoise Valley. As of this writing, “The Rattler” remains the only Par 6 in Arizona, and according to Today’s Golfer (UK), the
10th- Longest Golf Hole on Earth!

Yet there are lots of great golf courses and fine restaurants in this big world of ours; and while too few of either possess that rare combination of value and quality that contributes so mightily to the Turquoise Valley experience, we can never forget what actually separates us from the pack.
Or as one person put it, our greatest charm is our charm.
And we hope you enjoy the experience!
